ABOUT THE FILM
Every artist wants to keep seeing the world through the eyes of a child - the very nature of curiosity, wonder, and fascination of the things around us. Michael Doret, is the embodiment of this.
This short documentary explores the life and work of Michael Doret, the legendary letterform designer behind some of the most iconic visuals in popular culture - from the New York Knicks logo and KISS’ Rock and Roll Over album cover to the typography of Wreck-It Ralph and many others. Often regarded by his peers as one of the pioneers of modern display lettering, Doret played a key role in shaping the “font mania” we see today.
His work feels inherently fantastical, a sensibility rooted in childhood, when he would obsess over logos and amusement park ride billboards.
In the film, Doret reflects on his deep visual fascinations, his meticulous pre-computer mechanicals for printing, and a moving story about his father - the quiet turning point that set him on the path of becoming a letterform designer.
This film is not just about design, but about how early wonder evolves into a lifelong creative calling.
